Stone retaining walls are one of those things that slowly turn green and you stop really noticing it - until you do. Moss and algae build up in the crevices, spread across the caps, and before long the whole wall just looks dark, dirty, and neglected. It happens fast, especially in shaded or moist areas of the yard.
Here's what we were working with on this one - a block retaining wall running along the backyard completely overtaken by thick green moss. The tops of the blocks were almost entirely covered, and the face of the wall had that dark, grimy buildup that makes a wall look way older than it actually is. Not a great look for an otherwise well-kept yard.
We went in with a pressure wash specifically dialed in for stone surfaces. Too aggressive and you risk blasting out the joints or damaging the block surface. Too light and you're just wetting the wall. Getting it right means the moss lifts clean and the natural color of the stone actually comes back - which is exactly what happened here. The difference is night and day.
Stone block walls like this one are surprisingly resilient once the organic growth is removed. What looked like a deteriorating, stained wall turned out to be a clean, warm-toned block surface underneath all that grime. That's the part most homeowners don't expect - how good the material actually looks once it's properly cleaned.
If your retaining wall has been slowly going green, it's worth getting it taken care of before that growth really sets in. Moss holds moisture against the surface and can work into the joints over time. A good professional wash handles the mess and helps protect the wall going forward.
